 HERITAGE NO : 21 Joseph Brownbill by Alex Service A local-born forward, Joseph Brownbill played in the very first game at Knowsley Road, against Manchester Rangers, on Saturday 6th September 1890, together with his brother John. Joseph certainly cemented his name into club folklore when he scored the first try on the new ground. Joseph caught the ball from a line-out, or throw-out as it was then called and plunged over the line for a try. We must not forget that the match was played under Rugby Union rules. His brother John actually missed the conversion. Joseph made his debut in the professional Northern Union against Tyldesley on 20th October 1895 and played his last match for the club three years later against Swinton. In all he took part in 38 matches for the Saints. The 1939 Census finds Joseph living in Havelock Street, St Helens. He had an interesting job as a Black Ash Maker and he passed away in February 1944 aged 71. His brother, John, died tragically at the age of twenty, a few weeks after that first match at Knowsley Road. His gravestone, in St Helens Cemetery has the following inscription: This memorial was erected as a mark of respect by the members and friends of the St.Helens Rugby League Club to John Brownbill who died on Oct.15th 1890, aged 20 years. Gone but not forgotten. Alas, he was a victim of typhoid fever. There is a link with another great St Helens sporting family, as one of his daughters, May, married Saints scrum-half Matt Creevey from Pocket Nook. |
