Biography of Jack Butler
HERITAGE NO : 423 Jack Butler by SHS John or Jack Butler, as he was known, was from Thatto Heath and made his senior debut for the Saints against Widnes at Naughton Park on 25th August 1934. Recorder, in the St. Helens Reporter said that John Butler “ran about, trying to do two men’s work”, so he was nothing if not enthusiastic! The Chemics won 12-0 that afternoon and our old friend Premier, in the St. Helens Newspaper, gave us another insight into what was a memorable debut in more ways than one: “Butler was badly knocked out…but still played well though a bit over-awed. He should ignore the advice being tendered to him about being too clever. We may have had so many forwards without brains as to make us suspicious about forwards with originality and confidence; but we want Butler to do the stuff that got him into the team. That’s what he was chosen for”. Jack played a further two games for the seniors, the return against Widnes and at Swinton, before returning to the A team for a spell. Indeed, his next foray with the seniors was against Widnes once again, on 7th September 1935, when the Saints lost 6-8 on their travels. His final match was against Barrow at Knowsley Road on 16th January 1937, when Barrow won 2-15. Unfortunately, for all his effort and undoubted skill, Jack never played on the winning side for the team! Jack signed for local rivals St. Helens Recs on 23rd October 1937, re-joined Saints on 09/11/1937 and then moved on to Keighley on 16/12/1937. He later appeared, we believe, for Liverpool Stanley after the War. In 1939 he was living in Heath Street, Thatto Heath,, St Helens and was a Clay Pit Heavy Worker. He died in St Helens in March 1986, aged 73. Quite a well-travelled man was Jack Butler!
