 HERITAGE NO : 899 The St Helens RFC programme for the game against Rochdale Hornets on 6th November 1973 carried news of a new signing: "After a number of successful trials in the A team we have signed David Campbell a very speedy winger. His vital statistics are 18 years, 5ft 9ins, 11 stone, being formerly with Widnes ICI RUFC. Last season he scored the fantastic total of 79 tries whilst playing for the Widnes ICI club." He made his debut at home to Featherstone Rovers on 10 February 1974, when Saints won 8-0. Billy Benyon was his centre that day. He scored his first try against Warrington at Knowsley Road on 15 December 1974 and went on to make 17 appearances for the club, scoring 8 tries, the last during a 13-12 victory against Warrington in a first round Challenge Cup tie on 12 February 1977. In fact, he played three times against the Wires for Saints and scored in each of them. He was a speedy winger, on either flank, who would never let the team down when selected. Yet it was a competitive time at Knowsley Road, with the likes of Frank Wilson, Les Jones, Roy Mathias and John Wills around. After his playing days David took up the whistle and became a well known first grade referee. | ||||
