 HERITAGE NO : 552 Harold Caldwell by Alex Service The informative They Played for Wigan, by Mike Latham and Robert Gate provided us with some clues as to the origins of this wartime Saints player. Harold is listed as scoring 6 tries for the Riversiders, from 18 appearances during 1940-43. He is also mentioned as a member of the All Saints junior club. During the war, of course, players made themselves available wherever they could and not necessarily for their usual team. When the Saints played Halifax on 5th December 1942, there were several new faces in the team. A lad called Roberts was on one wing making his debut and Caldwell the other. The St. Helens Reporter pointed out that he was on the Wigan register and he had made a second successful appearance for his team, scoring a brilliant try that was engineered from a kick by his centre, the great Jimmy Stott. Although Harold did not play many matches for St. Helens, he seemed to have a fair bit of pace and he was one of many to help the club to carry on through difficult times. Thanks to his grandson, Isaac Caldwell, for confirming some personal and career details. Isaac also suggests that Harold played for Keighley and other Yorkshire clubs as well. Indeed he did. Furthermore, our research has found Harold playing for Wakefield and Huddersfield. In 1939, Harry lived in Preston Street, Ince and was employed as a Builder's General Labourer. |
