Biography of Charles Collins



HERITAGE NO : 246
Charles played 21 official games for the Saints from January 1919 to January 1921 as a centre or full-back. In these matches he scored 3 tries and kicked 11 goals. In October 1920 Charles scored 2 tries and kicked four goals in the match against Askam. In addition he played 20 matches during World War One. He was a Bottle Maker and General Labourer who was living in Lyon Street, St Helens in 1939. He died in St Helens in December 1980 at the age of 86.

Your former player Charles Collins joined Warrington in January 1921 where he was known as Charlie Collins. He made his debut on January 15 1921 at home to Swinton. His last appearance came on December 9 1922 at home to Oldham. Charlie made 18 appearances but did not score any points. He did, however, help Warrington to win the Lancashire Cup for the first time, against Oldham at The Cliff in December 1921. Sadly, he could not play a full part in the final because he suffered a dislocated shoulder after about half an hour and had to leave the field, leaving Warrington to play with 12 men for 53 minutes.

Charlie was also involved in a coaching and training capacity with the famous Golden Lion amateur team from St Helens in the early 1930s.
