|Corbett by SHS |
One of an intriguing bunch of players to have played just one First Team match for the club, Corbett (we do not have any christian name) featured at number 8 in the opening game of the 1923-24 season against Widnes at Knowsley Road, which Saints won 5-3. Since his name does not appear in the Signing on Registers, it is more than likely that he was a trialist as such. This is given possible credence by reading part of the match report from legendary Saints’ scribe Tom Reynolds, who was not exactly full of praise for the debutant: “If Corbett has a good job in his native place, I should advise him to stick to it. He is by no means certain to make good in first league rugby and a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.”
We do not know what happened to him after leaving Knowsley Road with such scathing criticism ringing in his ears. If you have any further information about this player, we would like to hear from you. Please note his date of birth has been notionally allocated.
