Biography of Ozzy Cottam |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 173 Ernest Osborne Cottam, universally known as Ozzy, played his only game for the first team in the substantial home defeat to Oldham by 38 points to 0 early in the 1908-09 season. He played in the forward pack in this match and made his debut together with the Irish forward George Godfrey. It should be noted that there were several all-time greats amongst his team mates that afternoon, such as evergreen forward Billy Briers and flying Lancashire wingman Jimmy Flanagan. Ernest must have played in the A team at Knowsley Road and his involvement in rugby is hardly surprising, given the fact that, like fellow team-mate Jimmy Mavitty, he was renowned throughout Lancashire for his feats of strength. He began his working life as a Grocers Assistant and later worked as a Master Tiler, living much of his life in North Road, St Helens. Ozzy died in St Helens in June 1948 aged 61. His business, E O Cottam, the tiles supplier, is still up and running in Duke Street, which he began in 1912. Grateful thanks to his grandson, Peter Cottam, for the fabulous photo of Ozzy. Peter and Michael Cottam were later on hand at the family business to receive Ozzy’s Player Heritage Certificate and brochure from the SHS in early March 2020. |
