Biography of Jack Cox

HERITAGE NO : 638
Jack Cox by SHS

A Clock Face lad, Jack made five appearances for the seniors, all in the left centre position, as the club tried to build up its playing strength after the Second World War. His debut against Salford at Weaste saw him partner former RAF Navigator Albert ‘Sonny’ Doyle, but the Saints lost narrowly 5-6. He played most of his games during the Easter period of 1945-46 yet had to wait until November of the following season for his final bow against Swinton, at Knowsley Road, when he scored a fine try.

Jack was a solid member of the A team for several years, before he moved to Liverpool City, where he joined a thriving cohort of former Saints. He was a forceful player who was unfortunate in that he was never able to enjoy a victory in a St Helens first team jersey. Jack also played in a spirited St Helens team that lost 9-15 to Wigan on Good Friday, in front of 26,000 fans. It is believed he passed away in February 2010, aged 85.
