The first home match of the 1934-35 campaign brought the debut of a new welsh signing for the Saints from Swansea RUFC in the form of Islwyn Davies, known as Izzy. A threequarter who had great promise in his native Wales, the St.Helens Newspaper report stated that Izzy certainly was a promising signing: "The one highlight of the afternoon did not require intense study. The new Welsh capture, Davies, abounds with promise and with reasonable luck he should be coming to his best nicely with the experience and confidence that an additional game or so will bring. As he has known nothing apart from Rugby Union, it was not in the least surprising to see his defects which were directly attributable to lack of knowledge of the new code. He has done no training at all, apart from a short run out on Friday afternoon. It was not an ideal match into which to introduce a stranger, and his opportunities nil. His defensive qualities were fully tested, however, and he came through with colours flying high. From what little chance we had to judge his pace, he appears to be quite a fast runner. He has a very powerful hand-off but his paucity of chances prevented him from showing, whether or not, he has a sidestep or a swerve. He quickly became a favourite with the crowd by reason of his whole-hearted endeavour. The enthusiastic `He`ll do` which I heard on all sides proved that he had made a hit."

Izzy was a powerful running threequarter, who played 105 matches in his career at Knowsley Road, scoring 39 tries and kicking 48 goals, for a 213 point haul. He left in March 1937 to join Warrington and was sadly missed by Saints fans of the day.

In 1921 Jim Izzy was living in Elizabeth Street, Pentre, Wales. He lived with his parents Daniel and Hannah, two sisters and one brother. His father worked as a Labourer at the Bynea Steel Works in Llanelli. Izzy stayed in Warrington until his death in June 1997, aged 85.
