Biography of Joe Dewsnip

HERITAGE NO : 598
His first appearance for St Helens was in 1942 - 43 season as an amateur and he played 5 or 6 times using various guest names. In his personal papers he has kept the letters from the club asking him to report for training at the start of 43-44 and 44-45 but he continued to play as an amateur.

Joe scored a try on his debut against Batley playing in the centre inside winger W Horton. Saints prevailed that day by 13 points to 8. During 1943 he was in the team that entered a cup competition and was asked to formally register with the club but was concerned after he had signed that this meant becoming a professional and after three games wrote to both the club and the Rugby League to ask for the registration to be cancelled.

In 1945 he was called up into the army where he played union and has in his collection a team photo with Montgomery. After the war he had only the occasional game with Saints Joe also guested with Oldham and Dewsbury before signing with Broughton Rangers which eventually became the Belle Vue Rangers club. Joe played mainly at centre and wing and rarely at loose forward.

Joe died in Salford in November 2014, aged 93. Thanks to Andy Dewsnip for the information provided.
