Biography of David Dickinson

HERITAGE NO : 114
Dickinson by Alex Service

Details are somewhat sketchy about this particular player, save for a short article in the St. Helens Newspaper on 7th November 1902, which says that "It will be seen that Dickinson, who is the old Tyldesley and Salford player, comes into the team from last week, in place of Doherty. Dickinson has played some fine games for the A team and it is hoped he will fill the place of Barnes with credit."

A left sided winger or centre threequarter, he made five appearances for the club. His debut was at home to Leigh, when the Saints were defeated 2-13 in what turned out to be a relegation season. Dickinson's final match was at Hunslet on 13th December 1902, when the home team won 9-3. Our strongest suspicion is that the player is David Dickinson a cotton spinner from the Atherton and Tyldesley area. The 1939 Census finds this chap living in Manchester Road, Westhoughton. Our suspect died in Horwich in March 1940 at the age of 68. If anyone has any further details about this player, we would like to hear from you.
