Biography of Les Dutton |

HERITAGE NO : 682
Hookers were considered to be a valuable commodity in the post war years. If he was not able to win the ball, your team was starved of possession. Local lad Les made an impressive debut. "He has grit and ideas and should improve," said the St.Helens Newspaper. Yet Les was unable to make more than just a handful of First Team appearances as a result of the impressive form of Welsh hooker Reg Blakemore, the latter a real Knowsley Road legend. Born in Marshalls Cross and living in Manville Street, he joined the Saints from the UGB junior club, where he worked as a welder and signed for a £50 fee. Les made his senior debut on 12th March 1949 at Knowsley Road in the league match against Belle Vue Rangers in an 18-0 success. A reliable ball-winner from the scrums and lively in the loose, he formed a front row which also consisted of Walter Norris and Welshman Dickie Jones. The back row that day was Len Aston, George Parsons and Alan Prescott. He was something of a stalwart in the A team. Competition was intense at Knowsley Road and Les moved on to Belle Vue Rangers and followed this with spells at Salford and Wigan, before retiring from the game in the late 1950s. Les lived in Kiln Lane, St Helens. Sad to report that Les passed away in September, 2019 at the grand age of 91. |
