Biography of Stuart Evans

The Big Truck from Neath played for the Saints from September 1987 to April 1991. He was a big money signing who had played for Wales at international level in rugby union. A rugged type of player Stuart could make neat offloads as he was being tackled. He managed to score seven tries for the club before returning to South Wales.

Stuart was at the pinnacle of his career as a Neath and Walesa rugby union star when he signed for St Helens in September 1987, making his debut against Leigh on 13 September.

Saints had previous in bringing young Welsh internationals into rugby league early in their career, such as Warlow, Mantle and Wanbon. However, as a result of the fixture formula of the day, the players were able to bed in gradually and were given the less exacting games to cut their teeth in. But the games of rugby union and six tackle rugby league had drifted further apart than in the sixties era. Saints had just been beaten at Wembley and Stuart was thrown into the deep end. A mature rugby union international with a big name.

Stuart was very good at the things he was brought up to do, like scrummaging and there is no question he was a formidable opponent but by nature of the differences in the codes he was not as mobile as, say, Dave Chisnall.

Stuart made 80 appearances for the Saints, signing off with an appearance on 7 April 1991 away to Wakefield Trinity. The most fondly remembered Stuart Evans performance was the preliminary Challenge Cup tie at home to Castleford on 14 January 1990, when Castleford had a formidable pack, or so they thought they had! The Saints pack lined up as follows: Evans, Groves, Bateman, Forber, Haggerty and Cooper. Led by Stuart Evans, they blew away their opposing ‘six’ for a resounding 39-12 victory. Early in the game, one of Castleford’s top forwards decided to give Stuart his best shot. He took it like an armoured car would take a snowball and it did not deter him in the slightest!
