Biography of Les Fairclough

HERITAGE NO : 284
Leslie Fairclough by Alex Service

Late in the 2010 season, the last at Knowsley Road, the St. Helens club named their 17 Greatest Players. One or two eyebrows were raised when Les Fairclough was selected in the stand-off half position. Names like Paul Sculthorpe, Frank Myler, Leon Pryce and Bill Francis were all touted by the fans. Yet for those with any knowledge of Saints' history, there was only one real contender. In terms of his achievements at club and county level, together with his fantastic exploits during the 1928 Tour to Australia and New Zealand, it was always going to be Les Fairclough. The Aussies raved about him and he could have ended up playing for a host of clubs Down Under once the tour was over. It is to his credit that he stayed at Knowsley Road and continued to enhance his reputation still further.

Leslie Fairclough had signed for the Saints on Christmas Day 1917, when he was on leave from the Army, having enlisted some time previously as a drummer boy in the Fourth South Lancashire regiment. Earlier still, he had been a schoolboy star at Rivington Road School and it was his old Headmaster and Saints' Chairman Tom Phillips, who signed him on. Fairclough played his first match in the A Team on a wet day in 1919, alongside a scrum-half called Walter Groves, but it is hard to believe that the lad who was to become Saints' greatest home grown stand-off was initially sent back to the Junior Leagues because he was deemed to be too small for professional rugby.

Yet Fairclough returned to Knowsley Road and the still frail-looking 18-year-old made his debut in the home match against Rochdale Hornets on 5 February 1921. Despite Saints' 10-0 demise, Fairclough more than caught the eye. Les had the toughest of baptisms, playing against the fearsome Rochdale half-back Ernie Jones. Reputations meant nothing to the Little Drummer Boy, however, and on this occasion, Big Ernie found it extremely difficult to get to grips with his young opponent. Fairclough stood well away from the pack, took the ball on the run, put it to the centres and then came round for the return pass, with all the finesse and composure of a veteran. Leslie seemed to have all the essential skills for a top class number six. He was later to resume his partnership with Walter Groves that became one of the most reliable and durable combinations in the league.

Leslie went on to play 355 matches for the Saints and although not a prolific try-scorer as such, was one of the most creative stand-off halves in the game. One of his best seasons was 1926/27, when he scored 17 tries from 37 appearances, including a vital touchdown against local rivals Recs at Warrington in the Lancashire Cup final. After 15 minutes of an engrossing derby clash, Saints' centre Alf Frodsham caught the ball from some loose play and put in a tantalising grubber kick which caught the Recs' defence flat-footed. Les Fairclough, following up, picked up the ball cleverly on the bounce, beat second rower Albert Fildes with a beautiful swerve and shot under the posts for a superb opportunist try. The Saints went on to lift the Lancashire Cup for the first time in their history by 10-2, after a further try by wing sensation Alf Ellaby, who was to benefit immensely from Fairclough's excellent service to his centres.

Fairclough was an integral member of the side described as the Team of all the Talents that won the Lancashire League title in 1930, but fell, disappointingly at the last hurdle to Widnes in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley. Les was outstanding in both semi-finals against Wigan, however, keeping hopes alive in the 5-5 draw in the first match at Swinton. He gave a veritable master-class of stand-off play in their 22-10 success in the replay at Mather Lane, Leigh, having a hand in all his team's four touchdowns. He beat three Wigan defenders with a seemingly effortless swerve and change of pace before setting up Saints' third three-pointer, which was finished off, inevitably, by his Great Britain team-mate Alf Ellaby.

Leslie played a record 21 times for Lancashire, a distinction he holds with Bryn Evans of Swinton. His first appearance was against Yorkshire at Oldham on 8 December 1924 and he made his international debut for England in the 27-22 success over Wales just over twelve months later. His elusiveness and marvellous hands made him an automatic choice for the 1928 Australian Tour, together with three of his team-mates, Alf Ellaby (wing), Alf Frodsham (centre) and second-rower Ben Halfpenny. Despite certain reservations as to the relative strengths of the squad, Les Fairclough and Ellaby played a big part in defeating the Australians and bringing home the Ashes. Both excelled on the hard grounds Down Under and scored crucial tries in the First Test at Brisbane, as Great Britain won by 15-12. Fairclough missed the Second Test through injury, but scored a brace in the Third Test in Sydney. Les captained Great Britain in the next Test against the Kangaroos at Hull on 5 October 1929, although the home side lost heavily. It was his last match against the Australians, yet he continued as the regular stand off for both Lancashire and England in 1930/31.

It was unfortunate that a persistent knee injury denied Fairclough a League Championship medal in 1932, when he played a mere nine matches. After an abortive come-back in 1932/33, he called it a day after an outstanding career in domestic and international rugby. When he was offered the chance of a testimonial match, he insisted that the proceeds were shared with his old team-mate Walter Groves, typical of his selfless nature! A publican and later a Railway Locomotive Fireman, Leslie became a member of the Saints' Committee after the Second World War, but unfortunately died from cancer in October 1951 aged 49, a sad loss indeed. He and Alf Ellaby are the most influential Saints' players in the era before the Second World War, renowned in both Britain and Australia. Leslie was also the first Saint to captain his country. Enough said. He was therefore a worthy inductee into the Greatest 17 Saints team. His family were extremely proud of this, with good reason.
