A strong, forceful forward who could play either in the front or second row, George was a miner at Lea Green Colliery and made his debut for the Saints at the start of what was to become one of the most talked-about seasons in the history of the club. The First World War was raging on 12th December 1914, when George took his place in the front row at Watersheddings when the visitors won 9-5. His other partners in the front row were hooker Sam Daniels and Harry Heaton. George went on to score his first try in the New Year against Oldham, as the Saints embarked upon one of their most famous Challenge Cup campaigns. They played every round away from home, at Featherstone, Swinton, Keighley and two semi-final matches with Rochdale, before reaching the final, where they played the mighty Huddersfield team, led by Harold Wagstaff. Alas, the Saints came a little unstuck that day at the Watersheddings, as The Team of all the Talents romped to a 37-3 success over St. Helens. Mind you, The Saints had overachieved somewhat to even get there in the first place, although there were rumours of certain players being unsettled before the game, as promised bonuses were not paid by the committee.

George, who once lived in Owen Street, in Toll Bar, joined the Royal Army Medical Corps as the conflict in Europe escalated and Private George Farrimond 2178 RAMC was later awarded the Military Medal during his time on the Western Front. Recipients of the Military Medal, presented for acts of gallantry and devotion under fire to non-commissioned ranks, are entitled to use the post-nominal letters MM. This award was an addition to the British War Medal and Victory Medal he also came back with to blighty.

George continued his rugby career with the Saints after the conflict and played his last match at Bradford Northern on 9th September 1922 at loose forward, when the Saints lost a tight contest by 2-3. He played over 100 matches for the club and rarely had a bad game. Sad to relate that George eventually suffered from his work at the coal face and died somewhat prematurely from mining-related illness in October 1949 at the age of 56. He was then living in Whittle Street and was a real pillar of the community. An active member of the Independent Church, he was also a member of the Thatto Heath IM Prize Band and was Chairman of Thatto Heath Bowling Club. His gallantry on the battlefield in particular gives him a special place in the pantheon of St. Helens players.
