Biography of John Fieldhouse



HERITAGE NO : 989
This affable Wiganer played for the Saints from November 1986 to August 1989. The hard grafting forward gained international honours for Great Britain whilst at the Saints, having played in all three tests against New Zealand. John could play either at prop or second row and was adept at reading the forward plays of the opposition. He continued his career in 1989 in the sunshine of Oldham.

Born on 28 June 1962 in Wigan and the son of an ex-Salford professional, Derek, John was a tall red-haired prop or second rower, who had a stellar CV. After making his name at Warrington, he was transferred to Widnes in exchange for Andy Gregory and then, after failing to settle at Naughton Park, came to Saints as part of an exchange deal with Harry Pinner.

At this time he was in the process of winning his 7 Great Britain caps and in 1985 his debut made a strong impression against a strong New Zealand team.

He made his debut for Saints on 23 November 1986 against Hull and made the last of his Great Britain appearances, against Australia, shortly afterwards.

There is no question about John’s ability, but it was unfortunate that as a result of injury, Saints never really saw the best of his considerable talent, which included an appearance against Halifax at Wembley in 1987.

His last match for Saints was the week after the gut-wrenching 27-0 defeat against Wigan in 1989, when he played in the play-off defeat at Widnes, when the team lost 14-38. John then moved to Oldham to further his career.
