Biography of Ike Fishwick

HERITAGE NO : 502
Harold Ike Fishwick by Alex Service

Signed just before the outbreak of War, Ike was the classic hooker of his day, the most important man in the team. He would attempt to get the ball from the scrum by fair means or foul and in the loose Ike would also be a real handful.

He made his debut against a strong Salford side in the War Emergency League on 11th November 1939. His front-row partners that day were Bob Grundy and the legendary Porky Davies His brother Bill also played on the right wing.

Ike was a stalwart of the Saints team that was re-built after hostilities had ceased and he faced little competition for the number nine jersey until the signing of Welshman Reg Blakemore in 1947-48. Ike played his last match for the Saints on 6th August 1948 against Salford and joined Warrington. He shared a benefit at Knowsley Road with centre Jim Stott, who had joined the club at the same time before the War. The following article catches up with Ike in the early 1970s. A paver for the Corporation in St.Helens, it is obvious that he was a real character.

This article about hooker Ike Fishwick appeared in the Rugby Leaguer on Wednesday 9th August 1972

You do the Ikey Crikey!

Former hooker Ike Fishwick has swapped his rugby boots for a pair of dancing shoes. In a 22-year career with Saints, Warrington, Blackpool Borough and Liverpool City, Ike was sent off eight times. Now with the enthusiasm that he once reserved for the 13-a-side game he has launched himself on a new career as a competition ballroom dancer.

With his wife Muriel, 47, as his partner 50-year-old Ike regularly trips the light fantastic in the ballrooms of Norfolk where the couple moved to from their Eccleston home nearly three years ago.
Now a foreman with a fertiliser firm in Great Yarmouth, Ike, who began his career with Saints in 1939 has many happy memories of his rugby days. He said: "I think the tough guy tag was a bit undeserved. I never started trouble but I was ready to mix it. I got more hidings than I gave though."

"There were one or two lads I always used to mix it with, like Dave Cotton at Warrington and Joe Egan and Ken Gee at Wigan but that is just part of the game. I was sent off a few times but I think the refs had the wrong idea about me. You could say I was victimised."

Ike and his wife have not won any championships yet but they are expecting success in the future. Said Ike: "Just recently we have been going into the holiday chalet business and we have not had much time but this winter we will be after the titles and I think we have got a good chance. Mostly we do modern dancing but we both like the old time and I think we could be going in for that too."

At five feet ten and 13st. 71b. Ike is only a few pounds heavier than in his playing days. He thinks the credit for this must go to his dancing. He said: "I still do a bit of training on the beach but now its to keep me in trim for the dancing. It really keeps you fit and there is nothing cissy about it. In fact some of the lads playing today, particularly the backs, should take up dancing. It will keep them fit and give them that extra bit of speed."
