In the early 1930s, young Bill Fletcher was seen as a fine prospect by those at St.Helens RLFC. By August 1931, the St.Helens Newspaper talked about him in promising terms: 'Those fans who have been at the Practices held so far have been interested in a young giant named Fletcher, who for his size can get along at a remarkably fast speed. He is not yet 19 years of age, is 6 feet 2 inches in height and according to the official weights, weighs 16 stones. He had a trial with the Recs when only 17 years of age but was struck off their books after which he played with the St.Patricks team. He is wonderfully built for the forwards and should develop into a first class man.'

Bill made his First Team debut against Widnes at Knowsley Road on 3rd September and the newspaper report talks about the somewhat raw lad who came out of the ordeal with great credit. He went on to make 47 appearances for the club and kicked the occasional goal, before joining Barrow in January 1937. A farmer, he is best remembered for his time at Holme Farm virtually next door to the Knowsley Road ground. He died in October 1993 at the age of 80. His son Geoff carved out his own lengthy career in Rugby League folklore, but that is another story. Thanks to grandson Wayne for the image of Bill.
