Biography of Harold Forsyth

HERITAGE NO : 460
Harold Forsyth by SHS

Harold made his debut on 2nd February 1937 as a centre, with Ossie Jones outside him, as Saints overcame Hull KR 9-2 at Knowsley Road. Born in Cumbria, Harold was signed as a winger, however and most of his matches were on the left flank for the Red and Whites. His best season was his first one, 1936-37, when he made 14 appearances and scored 4 tries. Yet Saints were really starting to struggle at that time. The great years of the late 1920s and early 1930s had disappeared and the club basically had to sell their stars to survive. Traveller, in the St. Helens Newspaper wrote the following about the game against Featherstone Rovers, on 20th February 1937:

Another pleasing feature was the display of Saints two young recruits, Cunliffe, a front row forward and Forsyth, a right wing threequarter. I think that Forsyth should be given another run in the first team despite his lack of speed. Trainer Carson, I understand, has great hopes of bringing much more speed out of the boy than he is showing at present. If there is any more in him, who is there better to bring it out than Carson.

Harolds rugby career was interrupted by the war and he made one final appearance for the club, on 1st September 1945, against Widnes. Saints lost this traditional opening day fixture 2-7 and Harold was transferred to Liverpool Stanley, where he joined another ex-Saint, Jack Bradbury.

In 1939 he was living in OSullivan Crescent, St Helens and working as a General Labourer. He died in St Helens in September 1983, aged 70.
