Biography of Alf Frodsham

Alf Frodsham by Alex Service

A member of a sporting family from Pigot Street in St.Helens, Alf Frodsham was on Saints' books as an amateur from an early age but allowed to drift. He was playing Rugby Union at Doncaster, for the Pilkington Works team and attracted the attention of Huddersfield and Halifax. On hearing this, Alf was invited by the St.Helens Board to play in the Boxing Day clash at home to Wigan in 1922 and signed on professional forms afterwards. He gradually cemented a regular place in the First Team, essentially as a centre, although he could play anywhere in the back line with equal effectiveness.

Alf wore the number 3 jersey as a member of the famous St.Helens team that brought the Lancashire Cup home to Knowsley Road for the first time in the club's history, against Recs on 20 November 1926. Fast and direct, Frodsham scored 22 tries during the campaign and came to the notice of the county selectors. Playing on the right wing, (club-mate Alf Ellaby was on the other flank) he scored on his debut for Lancashire in a stunning 28-3 victory over New Zealand at Leigh. Before the end of the season, he was left centre in the England team that defeated Wales 11-8 at the Cliff, Broughton.

Overall, Alf made 5 appearances for Lancashire in the County Championship and won them all, with a further match against Australia, at Warrington in 1929. He gave a stunning performance during the 1928 Tour Trial at Headingley, when he scored three superb tries for the Whites against the Reds, which assured him of a place in the Squad to visit Australia and New Zealand, one of four Saints' players to make the trip. (Alf Ellaby, Les Fairclough and Ben Halfpenny were the others). Alf made 17 appearances on tour, scoring 15 tries. He played in the Second and Third Tests in New Zealand, which Great Britain won to clinch the rubber.

He was on the verge of further glory with the Saints when he was transferred to local rivals Recs for £450, in February 1929 - a result of his dissatisfaction at not being guaranteed a Benefit at the end of his career. The emergence of young centre Bill Mercer and the signing of New Zealand winger Roy Hardgrave also made competition for places very intense. Ironically, Alf went on to pick up his second Lancashire Cup Winner's medal when the Recs beat Wigan 18-3 at Station Road. Alf returned to Knowsley Road briefly as a player in 1937 and took over as First Team Coach for a spell just after the War. In 1939 Alf was living in Hamblett Crescent , St Helens and working as a Steel Erector and Glassworks Labourer. He later moved south to Swindon, Wiltshire where he died in March 1974, aged 71. Harry followed him into the Saints team as a scrum-half and another brother, Eric, found fame as a full-back with Warrington. A sporting family indeed!
