 HERITAGE NO : 803 Peter Goddard by SHS Peter Goddard was signed from Oldham and made his debut against Hull KR at Craven Park on 9th March 1963, not long after the league programme had resumed as a result of one of the worst winters on record. He played at open-side prop in the match, but by the end of the campaign, Peter had played in every pack position for his new club, including hooker. Indeed, the pack for his debut game was: Goddard, Dagnall, Watson, Tembey, Huddart and Major. A powerful, bustling sort of player, quite squat, he made 20 appearances for the Saints before returning to Oldham in November 1963. His final game for St.Helens was against Featherstone Rovers at Knowsley Road, which resulted in an 11-11 draw, in front of just 4,454 fans. Many critics pointed to the overall forward dominance of the team at the time and the need to open out play to a greater degree for the threequarters. The forward pack for Peter's last match as a Saints was: Tembey, Goddard, Watson, French, Ashcroft and Laughton. Once again, the match had shown Peter's versatility as a forward. Peter died in February 2019 at the age of 78. | ||||
