Peter Gorley was one of Saints shrewdest buys in the summer of 1979. This strong running, rugged second row forward was also gifted with an excellent armoury of offloads. The formidable 6ft2in, 15 stone forward joined Saints from Workington Town for a 22,000 pound fee. Early signs that Saints had signed a diamond came in his debut against Rochdale Hornets on the 9th of October, 1979 in the first round of a BBC TV Floodlit Trophy match. He stormed onto a pass to scatter the Hornets` defence and plunge over the line. This set up an impressive 45 points to 17 Saints victory. This hardened professional was sorely needed to steel up a playing squad that was a mixture of ageing stars and inexperienced youngsters. His first season try haul of five touchdowns from 31 appearances was accomplished in a difficult transition season for the Saints.

In his second season Peter was even more impressive as he crossed the opponents tryline nine times in 31 appearances. This tally included a brace in the 26 points to 6 home win over Hull. His timing in taking the ball up then squeezing out the ovoid to supporting colleagues neared perfection. Peter`s outstanding performances that season brought him three international caps courtesy of Great Britain. Things got even better for the tough nut from Cockermouth. His 11 tries haul from 30 matches was a career best at the Saints and the total was only one behind joint leading top try scorers Chris Arkwright and Roy Haggerty.

Gorleys performances were in the context of a side being rebuilt by coaches Coslett then Benyon for future glory. Up to the start of the 1983/4 season Peter played exclusively in the second row but in the last 16 matches of that campaign Gorley moved up to the front row. The Cumbrian was very much the hard man of the Saints` pack as fortunes started to look up at the commencement of the 1984/5 season.

The arrival of Mal Meninga at Knowsley Road brought a fresh optimism to the club and revitalised the incumbent squad members. Match after match in that glorious campaign Peter would make full and half breaks to release predators like Pinner, Arkwright and Holding. Saints made a fabulous start to the season and progressed to the Lancashire Cup Final where they met archrivals Wigan at Central Park on October 26th. 1984. Reports of the match rightly highlight the massive contributions of the Wizard of Aus but the whole of the Saints back line greatly benefited from the drives of Gorley who gave the Saints splendid field position in the first half. At the conclusion of the season Saints had won a place in the Premiership Final to face champions Hull KR at the compound that was Elland Road. After just two minutes of the Final, a clever ball from Harry Pinner was gratefully picked up by Peter Gorley who powered up to the Hull KR 25 yards line. As the defence closed in on Peter he released a perfectly timed pass to Chris Arkwright who sent Gary Ainsworth dashing the last twenty yards to the opposition tryline. It was a lead Saints were never to relinquish.

In his last season at the Saints Gorley played 24 matches before moving back to his native Cumberland with Whitehaven. Whilst at Knowsley Road Peter also gained 5 caps for Cumbria. Every great team needs a man of granite in the pack; in the first half of the 1980s, Peter Gorley was our man!
