Biography of James Gormley

HERITAGE NO : 298
James Gormley by SHS

A member of a famous local family from the Pocket Nook area, James played his junior rugby for the Pocket Nook Shamrocks, based at the local public House of the same name. His elder brother, Tommy, played in the threequarters for Warrington, St Helens RFC and St Helens Recs and was a Lancashire Cup winner with the latter in 1923-24. Alas, James didn’t quite achieve as much as his brother in the game, playing four matches for the Saints. Yet it is interesting that on his debut, against Rochdale Hornets, on 14th January 1922, James was on the left wing, with his brother accompanying him in the centre.

James continued to be a member of the A team for a couple of years and played his last match for the seniors on 3rd November 1923, when Saints were defeated 6-34 by a powerful Swinton team. This time, James played on the right flank, with Walter Groves, who found fame as a scrum-half later, as his centre. They were tough times for Saints, who were struggling financially and also local player recruitment was difficult because of their rivals, St Helens Recs in competition with them.

James passed away at the age of 41 in St Helens.
