 HERITAGE NO : 809 Les Greenall by SHS Les Greenall was born in Haydock and had two spells with the Saints. He was very much the old type of hooker, who would guarantee a steady stream of ball from the set scrums. An A Team stalwart for the first part of his career, he played several matches for Wigan in the 1966-67 season. An ex-Blackbrook player, Les went to Rochdale Hornets for a spell who gave him a free transfer and he ended up back at Knowsley Road. He was catapulted to fame during the 1971-72 season when he was called up to replace first-choice hooker Tony Karalius after the latter was injured before the Challenge Cup final against Leeds. Les did a fine job and wore the number 9 jersey the following week in the Championship final against the same opponents at Swinton. Unfortunately, Saints lost 9-5 in what proved to be a real revenge mission for the Yorkshiremen. His overall record for St.Helens is 16 appearances and four tries. His last match was against Salford at the Willows on 23rd February 1973 when he was on the subs bench with Brian Coward. |
