Biography of Harry Greenwood

HERITAGE NO : 179
Harry Greenwood by Dave Dooley

Harry was born on the 4th of November 1882 in Wadsworth, Heptonstall, Hebden Bridge. His father, Sutcliffe Greenwood died when Harry was just seven years old. His mother, Sarah nee Cockcroft, kept the family afloat working as a fustian cutter. Sadly she died in 1896 and Harry moved in with is uncle, Harry Cockcroft, who was Sarah’s brother. In 1901 Harry became a fitter and dyer for a fustian cutter.

After this turbulent upbringing, Harry decided to join the Leeds Police Force in October 1904. The 6 feet 1” recruit second class constable found this new life difficult and after several warnings for being absent from duty and unsatisfactory keeping pf his pocket book, Harry resigned from the force in 1905. Obviously, Harry must have retained a love of the job because one year later he was on the beat in Liverpool. Life was moving quickly in a positive direction and in December 1906 he married Sarah Elizabeth Clark. On the marriage certificate, his job was noted as a police constable and his father, Sutcliffe Greenwood, was recorded as deceased.

The following year he went with cousin Jimmy for a trial with Wigan. The two Greenwoods were signed and they played in the reserve side, gaining a gold medal when the team won the Lancashire Shield and the Lancashire League Championship. For the 1908 to 1909 season Harry and Jimmy transferred to St. Helens. Harry could play centre or stand off. He went on to play 42 matches from November 1908 to April 1911. He scored five singleton tries for the Saints. This number of matches indicates that Harry was a player of considerable merit. Harry played his last match for the Saints on April the 1st, 1911 when Widnes defeated the Saints at Knowsley Road.

Harry and his wife Sarah had three children, Rita, Ella and Leslie. At some point Harry changed professions and managed a famous pub in Everton, Liverpool. In 1939 the Census showed that Harry was the licensee of the Old Stingo Vaults public house in Netherfield Road, Everton, Liverpool. Not too far from the site of the Everton Toffee Shop.

As yet we can find no record of his death.
