 HERITAGE NO : 124 William Gregson by Alex Service There was some sensational news before the game against Barrow, according to the St. Helens Newspaper: 'It will be seen that Foulkes has been dropped and the A Team full-back Gregson, selected to take the position. Gregson played with Dalglish's Foundry in the Works competition last season and has this season played some smart games both with the A Team and in the practice matches. It is to be hoped he will come off although it is a rather risky selection for the club to make considering that this is Gregson's first season as a rugby player and that the match is one of the stiffest in the club's programme.' The new debutant made a good impression against the Cumbrians. Once again, the evidence is in the St. Helens Newspaper: 'The new full-back Gregson came out of a most trying ordeal with every credit. He kicked a good length, fielded the ball well and several times tackled soundly and generally gave a display which was worthy of a further trial.' It does appear, however, that Gregson was unable to sustain his initial promise, after an indifferent performance against Normanton. According to the St. Helens Newspaper once again, the tone was somewhat more negative: 'With regard to the players I am sorry that I cannot write in glowing terms of all the team. At full-back Gregson only did fairly and is not yet fit for the first team.' After five first team matches, Gregson did not appear for the Saints. Whether he kept on in the A team or went to another team, we do not know. The glass packer from Rainford Road, St Helens died in April 1953 and his death was registered in Prescot.
