In what was becoming a transitional period for the St.Helens club, the mid 1930s saw several stars sold to offset mounting debt and new faces come in. Amongst those was Ossie Griffiths, who added much-needed forward power and guile to a relatively inexperienced pack. The St.Helens Newspaper describes the signing thus: "On Tuesday evening the Committee came to terms with Oswald Thomas Griffiths, the Wigan loose forward. It is understood that the transfer was agreed upon between the St.Helens and Wigan clubs at the time that Ellaby was transferred to Wigan, but it was only on Tuesday evening that Griffiths actually signed. He is famed for his brilliant handling ability. He can handle as well as any threequarter and that is one of the prime reasons why he has gained the reputation he now possesses as a utility man. Those who saw Wigan triumph over Salford in the final of the Rugby League Championship will not readily forget the display which Griffiths gave that day. In his Rugby Union days, Griffiths and Lemon were colleagues."

One of the problems for Ossie was a regular position, but he was really a loose-forward. A former member of the Cwmavon junior club in his native Wales, he made a superb start to his career at St.Helens with 42 appearances in his first season at Knowsley Road. Yet he was never to sustain that particular level of success. Ossie joined Halifax on 30/11/1935, where he played 53 matches for the Thrum Hallers, before coming back to St.Helens on 01/02/1938. He played in 79 matches for the Saints overall in his two spells, scoring six tries.

Outside rugby Ossie was a General Labourer. By 1939, he had returned to South Wales and was living in Aqueduct Street, Port Talbot. Ossie died in Neath in December 1989, aged 80.
