Biography of Bob Grundy

HERITAGE NO : 499
Bob was a stalwart player for the Saints during World War Two. He was a great utility player and turned out at prop forward, in the second row and even in the centres or on the wing. Bob played 55 matches for the club and kicked 16 goals in these matches. His try haul of 9 touchdowns included a brace against Wigan in the Yorkshire Cup. Now that is what you would call unusual. Bob moved over the Pennines and died in Rotherham in July 2001, aged 79.

Dave Dooley

Further information about Bob Grundy by SHS: Both Bob and his brother Bill played initially for the old St Helens Recs team before the Second World War. Bob was a back-rower and displayed the somewhat lost art of dribbling the football, a tactic to catch opposing defences unaware.

Bob could certainly shift a bit too and it is no surprise to see him drafted into the threequarters on numerous occasions for the Red Amber and Blacks. He made 94 appearances for them, scoring 21 tries until the end of the 1939-40 season, when the club was disbanded. Bob then turned out as a wartime player for the Saints, when his former club-mate Oliver Dolan was coach at Knowsley Road.

A long-distance lorry driver for Pilkingtons, Bob was involved in the D-Day landings and was to witness first hand the Nazi atrocities in the concentration camps some time later. He was also a renowned crown green bowler.
