 HERITAGE NO : 33 Known as Jim he was a local lad born in early 1877. His father, George, was a stonemason. He played for the Saints prior to the commencement of the Northern Union. Essentially, he was a full back but had little chance of displacing Tom Foulkes in the number one jersey. William married Catherine Ashall in August 1900 and they had four chuldren. Jim lived at 118 Lyon Street, St. Helens and worked as a bricklayer.He played for the Saints prior to the commencement of the Northern Union. Essentially, he was a full back but had little chance of displacing star Tom Foulkes in the number one jersey. Jim his debut for St. Helens against Kendal on the 11th of February 1893. Jim was part of a victorious side that day. Jim went on to make at least six further appearances for the Saints including a try scoring performance in the 19 points to nil victory over Duckinfield on the 17th of September 1892 . He played his final match for the Saints in the pre Northern Union era on the 18th of April 1895 in a home victory over Broughton Rangers. NORTHERN UNION ERA William James Harper donned the number one jersey in his only appearance for the Saints first team in the Northern Union. The game was an away league match at Wigan in which the Saints lost by 10 points to 0. The match report mentions that young Harper was pitched into the fray and found it a trying experience. Presumably he returned to A team football at Knowsley Road. James died in May 1957 in St Helens at the age of 80.
