Biography of Arthur Harrison |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 505 Arthur Harrison by SHS Arthur was another player whose career was affected by wartime. Born in Epsom Street on 18 February 1922, in the Broad Oak district of St Helens, he later moved to Broad Oak Road and attended Parr Central School. Arthur played rugby for the school, together with another future Saints player Ike Fishwick. He also travelled with the town team to play a series of matches in France in the late 1930s which included another future Saint, Tommy Leyland. Arthur signed for the club aged 16. He was a mobile and adaptable threequarter, who could play centre or wing and certainly seen as one for the future. Arthur made his debut at home against Leigh in the War Emergency League on 23 March 1940, when the Saints won 11-5. Ike Fishwick was hooker and Arthur was right centre to William Bate. His final game, just before military service beckoned, was at Dewsbury, where Saints gave a good account of themselves against the All Star Yorkshire team managed by Eddie Waring, going down by 26-17. Arthur was on the left wing, with Peter Twist, normally a back rower, as his centre partner. Although his sporting career was somewhat distended, he at least played in the team with the likes of the great centre Jimmy Stott, Ike Fishwick, rumbustious front rower Porky Davies and teenage scrum half Harold Briscoe, who tragically lost his life in the later years of the conflict. He stayed at Knowsley Road until he left in late September 1942 to join the Irish Guards. After guarding Buckingham Palace for a spell, he left to fight in Germany, where, as fate would have it, he met his future wife Hedwich. On demob, he moved to Chapel Street, with a further move to Ashton in Makerfield. A plumber by trade, Arthur passed away in Hindley in 2017, aged 95. The SHS would like to thank Allen and Bee Ashton for their help in compiling this biography. |
