Biography of Viv Harrison

HERITAGE NO : 689
Vivian Harrison by Alex Service

A former player with Chingford Rugby Union Club in Essex. Denis Whittle recalls yet another Welshman in the Saints' post-war squad: 'A schoolmaster. He was round about the same time as Don Gullick and was a quite brilliant player on his day. Vivian was a centre with a good sidestep, very much in the mould of Lewis Jones. He was a good kicker of a ball and was classical in many ways. He was not a 'rough' type of player at all.'

Vivian's stay in the thirteen-a-side code was not particularly long, but he certainly made his mark. He made his debut against Belle Vue Rangers on 18th April 1950 (another team with a strong Welsh connection) and kicked two goals in a 7-7 draw. The presence of Doug Greenall and another local legend, Jimmy Stott in the centres made it difficult for Vivian to put together a series of matches consecutively, but he was able to take part in 25 matches during the 1951-52 season, scoring 4 tries and kicking 29 goals. Probably his best individual performance came on 26th August 1950, when he scored two tries and kicked 6 goals in Saints' 36-2 success. He also put his winger Stan McCormick in for a three-pointer.

Vivian tended to play less with the arrival of famous Coach Jim Sullivan at Knowsley Road and played his last First Team game at home to Barrow on 13th December 1952 in a 26-9 success. He scored a try and his winger that afternoon was fellow Welshman Steve Llewellyn. Vivian was also good enough to represent his country at Rugby League, in what was a time of relative strength for the international XIII of Wales. He made his debut in the left centre position against France in Marseilles on 15th April 1951, when the other centre berth as occupied by his Saints' team-mate Don Gullick. George Parsons and Ray Cale were also in the team that day. Although the visitors lost 13-28, Vivian's next match for the Principality was against England on 15th September 1951 at Knowsley Road. Wales were beaten 11-35. Vivian's final representative game was against Other Nationalities at Abertillery on 1st December 1951. Unfortunately, Wales lost once again 11-22.

Before his Rugby League days Viv was living in Penybont, Glamorgan. Vivian moved to Essex and carried on with his teaching career after leaving St.Helens. He died in Redbridge, Essex in August,1989, aged 67.
