A local lad, who was signed from St.Helens RUFC, Jeff was substitute forward in the 1966 Challenge Cup final and played in the second half of the Championship final against Halifax the following week. A forceful front-rower, very much in the old-fashioned sense, Geoff was a local teacher at Parr High School for many years. He signed for the Saints in January 1966 and made his debut by coming off the bench in the 6-20 defeat at Swinton on 11th April. He was always on call for the First Team if required and he was a substitute forward on a number of occasions. His last match was a memorable one, in the mud at Hull in a tough Challenge Cup First Round clash on 25th January 1969, which Saints won 13-3. Remember Tommy Bishop's marvellous scooting try through the slutch? Five members of the 1966 Cup-winning side were still there that day: Benyon, Bishop, Watson, Sayer and Mantle.

Jeff spent some time with Widnes (in exchange for hooker Eric Hughes) before eventually retiring. He can be justifiably proud of appearing in major finals with some all-time great Saints' players. Jeff always gave everything when he came onto the pitch.

He still maintains a strong interest in the fortunes of his former clubs, Saints and Liverpool St Helens RUFC.
