Blackbrook-born scrum-half Billy Holland was signed from UGB in 1948-49 and played his first game for the A Team on 12th March 1949 at Belle Vue. Billy was strong for his size, with safe hands. He was also a cool head and quick around the base of the scrum. 'He was mostly an A Teamer,' remembered Denis Whittle. 'He would face competition for a First Team spot from Frank Beesley and Jimmy Honey.'
He was signed from the UGB Club and worked ss a glass toughner. Billy made his debut in the First Team against Oldham on 10th September 1949 at Knowsley Road, when Saints won 16-8 and he was accompanied at stand-off by Jimmy Honey. Billy made 19 appearances during the campaign ' by far his best run in the First Team. He finished with 32 appearances overall and 4 tries.

His last game in the seniors was against Workington at home on 17th November 1951. Saints lost 11-20 and his stand-off partner was Jimmy Honey once again. It was his sole appearance of the season. Billy later moved on to Liverpool City, like a number of former Saints' players before (and after) him. Billy died in December 2003, aged 77 and his death was registered in Knowsley.
