William Hunter by Alex Service

William was a local lad who made his debut against Tyldesley, who were known as the Bongers, on 11th February 1899. The Saints won this away fixture 6-3 and William played on the left wing. His centre was Sutton and in his next few games it was Jim Barnes. William's last match for the club was at Wigan, in the First Round of the Lancashire Cup on 14th October 1905. The Saints lost 0-18 and it was the end of a spell at the club which extended to 59 matches. His scoring record of 11 tries was not exactly prolific, but he had pace and was well worth his place in the team. It has to be said that the Saints were in the middle of their yo-yo existence between the First and Second Divisions.

William later played in 6 matches for Leigh, scoring two tries in 1906-07. After that, we do not have any record of any further matches for any other club. It is known that he passed away aged 69 on 24th December 1948. There does not appear to be an obituary in the local press, which is disappointing. It appears that he lived in Windleshaw Road, St. Helens before his death.
