An A Team stalwart and great clubman who lived in the Eccleston district certainly up to 2009, Ray was nicknamed 'Ram' and joined the St.Helens club during bthe second world war in 1943. He played in several back positions for the Saints over a period spanning seven seasons. On debut he kicked four goals against Keighley. His last match was against Bramley at Knowsley Road on 1st October 1949 and over 15,000 fans were there to watch Saints win convincingly 39-2. Ray played scrum-half that day, with Jimmy Honey as his stand-off. He was originally with the UGB amateur club. Saints Chairman Harry Cook, together with Duggie Greenall, were instrumental in getting Ray down to Knowsley Road. Ray died in St Helens in December 2010, aged 87.
