The Rugby League signing-on Registers give Williams address as Prescot, although he is believed to have been born at Rainford. William joined the St.Helens Rugby League club at the start of the 1914-15 season. Strong and fit, he was a front-row forward who made his debut against Runcorn on 5th September 1914. The Saints won 26-0 and William was in the second row for this match.

The 1914-15 season was a memorable one for the Saints, in that they reached the Challenge Cup final, somewhat against the odds, only for them to lose heavily against a Huddersfield team that was much more powerful. They were described as the Team of all the Talents. The match was played at the Watersheddings in Oldham and there were about 8,000 people present. William played in every game in the cup run itself. Unfortunately, the Saints received a 37-3 drubbing but for them, the major achievement was reaching the final itself, somewhat against the odds.
Family information states that William was in the Royal Engineers during the First World War and was one of the first soldiers to be affected by mustard gas. Thankfully, he regained his sight and became a PE Instructor in the army with the South Lancashire Regiment.

William played a total of 52 matches for the club in three seasons before he joined Wigan Highfield. Formerly employed at the BICC works in Prescot, his less strenuous sporting activities included bowls and billiards and he was a member of Prescot Conservative club for forty years.
