Biography of Joseph Jones

HERITAGE NO : 419
Joseph Jones by Alex Service

Joseph Jones was signed from local rivals St.Helens Recs and made his debut away at Barrow on 1st April 1934, replacing the injured Roy Hardgrave. It was hoped that he would be the ideal replacement for Alf Ellaby, when he left to join Wigan at the start of the 1934-35 campaign. Joseph played one match at the start of the season and then faded from the First Team scene at Knowsley Road. The newspaper correspondent Premier spoke about him as follows: His pluck, tenacity and defensive powers are qualities with which he is liberally endowed. He possesses a useful sidestep and swerve. Yes, speed, or the shortage of it, is his problem.

Needless to say Joseph was not the replacement for the great Alf that people thought he was going to be. It was a tall order indeed. Outside rugby he was a Glass Cutter and in 1939 he was living in Sutton Road, St Helens. He died in his hometown in June 1974, aged 62.
