A powerfully-built second row forward, who joined the Saints from Leigh East in December 1985, Paul Jones made his debut for the First Team against Halifax at Thrum Hall as a forward substitute. Unfortunately, the Saints lost 18-27 and the forward pack that day was Greinke, Dave Harrison, Gorley, Round, Forber and Allen. He was used mostly as a substitute during his time at Knowsley Road and it was a difficult time for the club, with Wigan exerting such dominance with their full-time squad. However, Paul was on the bench during one of the Saints best performances against the Riversiders, on 13th April 1990, when they thrashed the visitors 35-10 with a marvellous hat-trick from Les Quirk. Paul made 17 starts and 35 appearances as a substitute during his career at Knowsley Road and his final match for the club, starting on the bench with Les Quirk, was on 19th January 1992 against Wakefield Trinity, when the Saints won 40-12. At the start of the 1992-93 campaign, Paul, together with team-mate Sean Divine, was transferred to Oldham in a cash plus swap deal valued at £56,500 for Chris Joynt. It was a great piece of business for the St.Helens club, although both former Saints did not play in many matches for the Roughyeds. I believe that Paul helped to build the cone-shaped furnace entrance at the World of Glass and that he was one of the few bricklayers capable of such skill in the region.
