A local lad, who went on to complete 120 appearances for the Saints, Bob Jones was a model of consistency. The archetypal utility back with a good range of footballing skills he could fill all threequarter positions if needed, and either half-back role, although he did settle down to occupy the full-back role with distinction. He made his debut when the team were in their pomp, with a star threequarter line which included the great Alf Ellaby. Yet on his debut, against Wigan Highfield on 3rd November 1928, Ellaby was missing as the Saints lost at home to un-fancied Wigan Highfield. Charlie Crooks was the full-back that day and it was his retirement at the end of the 1929-30 campaign which gave Bob his chance to settle into the number one position.

Written in reports and team sheets as RE [Robert Edward] Jones, Bob did his teacher training at Chester College and was a contemporary of Frank Jones, a half-back, who also ended up signing for the Saints. By 1931-32 Bob was the regular full-back and he made 31 appearances, making a significant contribution to a season which finished with Saints claiming their first Championship final success after beating Huddersfield at Wakefield. This was done without Ellaby and Fildes, who were already on the boat for the Australian Tour!

Bob made 21 appearances in 1933-34 and also started to kick goals when needed. His last match for the club was against Barrow on 3rd November 1934 and he left behind an impressive 120 appearances for the Saints, scoring 19 tries and kicking 39 goals, a total of 135 points. By this time, financial austerity at Knowsley Road meant that many of the stars of the late 1920s had departed. In his last match, when he appeared at full-back, the threequarter line read as follows: Smith, Cross, Bradbury and Davies. This was a rather different team than the one he first came into.

It is believed that Bob retired from the game and concentrated on his teaching commitments at Rivington Road school. According to the Rugby League Registers, he lived at various times in Morgan Street, Brook Street and Corporation Street in St.Helens. The teacher was living in Corporation Street, St Helens in 1939. Bob died in March 1958, aged 50 and his death was registered in Prescot. We would welcome any further details about this player.
