 HERITAGE NO : 426 Bert Jones by Alex Service In what was a bleak time for the Knowsley Road club, with stars being sold to other clubs to try and offset mounting debts, the St.Helens Newspaper announced the surprise signing of Welsh international Rugby Union star Bert Jones from Llanelli. Described as 'Wales best scrum-half,' William Herbert Jones had played twice for his country against Ireland and Scotland during the 1933-34 Home Nations competition and was 22 years of age [Wales RU Player Number 487]. Bert also played for Wales in a Test Match against South Africa.He was quite well-built for a scrum-half, being 11 stone 4 lbs and 5 feet 8ins. Bert was no slouch behind the scrum base either. Unfortunately, Jones played just 14 matches for the club, his last against Wakefield on 1st December 1934. It is not known why his stay at the club was relatively short and we would welcome any further information about the player. We do know, however, that he died at Pontyberem, aged 76, in July 1982.
