Biography of Ken Kelly

This local product was one of the brightest prospects of the seventies at Knowsley Road. He was a very smart player and possessed an excellent ability to read the game. Consequently he was a great support player. After a couple of appearances in the 1969 to 1970 season, Ken blazed an incredible trail during September 1970. In just three matches he scored eight tries including two hat tricks against Hull and Hull KR. This headline grasping run came to a sad end in October 1970 when an unsavoury tackle left Ken with a broken jaw and out of the game for six months.

However like all good players he bounced back to the top. He played in the 1971 Championship Final when the Saints defeated Wigan in the Bandit Benyon finale. More honours came the way of Ken as the Saints collected the BBC2 Floodlit Trophy in a gutsy performance against Rochdale Hornets. The Challenge Cup Final of 1972 saw Ken collect a winners medal in a pulsating Final against Leeds. This rich vein of form led Ken to be selected for two Great Britain tests against France in 1972.

Ken scored a total of 49 tries for the Saints including a rare four try haul against Doncaster and another hat trick against Huyton. He left for Bradford Northern in 1973 and then onto Warrington where he gained further international honours with Great Britain.
