Biography of Arthur Lemon

HERITAGE NO : 410
Arthur Whitelock Lemon played rugby union for Neath RFC as a strong and mobile number eight, so good, in fact that he won no less than 13 caps for Wales at international level. His Welsh Player Number is 441. Born in Tonna, in 1905, Arthur enjoyed international selection from his debut against Ireland, on 9 March 1929, to his final appearance against the same country in 1933. He was an ever-present in the Welsh 1931 Five Nations squad.

After being left out of the Welsh team, Arthur decided to take the professional route with St. Helens. He was in his late twenties and felt that he could really make a name for himself in his new code. Apparently. Arthur like the odd pint or two and could not believe his luck when the Saints managed to get him a job at the local Greenalls brewery in Hall Street as a carpenter. Coach George Lewis remembered an occasion when he arrived late for training a little worse for wear, after an afternoon of celebration. Legendary Trainer Ted Forber promptly ordered him to do six laps of the training pitch, something that was positively unheard of. Arthur went round like the proverbial express train, prompting the somewhat exasperated Forber to report him fit for selection.

Arthur made his debut in the seniors against Hull KR at Knowsley Road on 4 September 1933 in a 21-11 victory. He played as a loose forward that afternoon, like his position in the other code, with Jack Arkwright and former Recs legend Frankie Bowen packing down in front of him. Arthur made 79 appearances for the Saints and scored 9 tries, although he did later graduate to the front-row, where he played his last match for the club, in a disappointing 2-8 defeat against Broughton Rangers at Knowsley Road on 1 May 1935. His partners up front were hooker Dave Cotton and stalwart prop-forward Bob Atkin. As a result of their continuing financial difficulties at Knowsley Road, Arthur was allowed to move south to the new Streatham and Mitcham club, where he captained the side and proved to be a popular team member. Outside rugby he was a Mason Labourer and by 1939 he was back in South Wales living in Hunter Street, Neath, Glamorganshire. Arthur passed away in Neath on 28 May 1982. He was 77 and remained one of the larger than life characters to have played for the Saints.
