The son of Jimmy Whisper Leyland Fred was a tough front-rower, who could operate on either side of the scrum. Fred Leyland began his rugby career with the local St.Helens RUFC, where he had a county trial, before joining his home town Rugby League club. He made his debut in not the easiest of circumstances, away at Barrow on 20th December 1958, making up the front-row with fellow-prop Abe Terry and hooker Tom McKinney in a 7-5 victory for the Saints.
Although he was predominantly an A Team player in the early days, the 6ft 15 and a half stone Leyland sprang to prominence in the 1960-61 season, making 23 appearances, scoring 3 tries. He won a Lancashire Cup winners medal against Swinton at Central Park, Wigan in front of over 31,000 fans as Saints won 15-9. He missed the 1961 Challenge Cup final at the end of the campaign, however, with Cliff Watson chosen to partner Abe Terry and Bob Dagnall in the front row and he played his last match against Warrington in 1962. The main reason was that rugby was conflicting with his job in the Police. The Boardroom Minutes of the time talk of 'frequent injury and subsequent absence from work' which forced his retirement, a great pity indeed. Fred made 55 appearances overall for the First Team, scoring 6 tries.

His boyhood was spent in Sunbury Street, St Helens. Fred died in St Helens in May 2012, aged 76.
