Saints opened the new Millennium [1st January 1901] with a friendly fixture against Huddersfield. It was the [unofficial] debut of this player from the A team, who took his place on the left wing. “Lyon was prominent with some good work”, wrote the St. Helens Newspaper. Lyon made his full debut seven days later at Barrow, when he was selected on the left wing, with the great Jim Barnes as his centre. Saints lost 5-14, but Lyon received much praise once more from the newspaper. Lyon was “the cleverest threequarter” and pounced on a loose ball to score a try.
Lyon’s last match was on 14th September 1901, when he played left centre, with Bob Doherty outside him. Saints beat Lancaster 4-0 in what must have been a bit of an arm wrestle! After that the trail goes cold. If anyone can supply any further information, or an image, of this player, please contact us.
