Biography of Tommy Martyn

HERITAGE NO : 1042
Tommy Martyn by Dave Dooley:

Tommy was masterful reader of the game. His deft passes complemented an eye for an opening in any quality defence, together with a varied artillery of tactical kicks made him a cornerstone and leading architect behind many of the Saints` successes in the Super League era. In a tight game situation Tommy usually came up trumps; a kingpin blessed with astute tactical awareness and original, creative plays. Crowned `Tommy God` by the popular side, his all round game and cheerful personality made him a huge hit with the supporters. No one could overestimate his contribution to the Saints` success of the super league era. The only mystery surrounding this enigma was the absence of international honours at Great Britain level.

by Dave Dooley:
Tommy Martin was born on the fourth of June 1971 in Leigh. He was signed from Tony Barrow`s Oldham side on second of August 1993. The following month he kicked four goals in his debut playing stand off against Salford (5/9/1993) in a 22 points to 14 home victory. He had moved into a Saints team that was very much in the reconstruction mode. In his first season he ended up the club`s top points scorer with 129 points from 16 tries, 28 goals and 9 drop goals. This haul included a hat trick of tries against Hull in a 52 points to 10 demolition of the East Yorkshire side on the 10th of April, 1994. Even in the first season these statistics illustrate Tommy`s vital contributions in all aspects of the game. Even in defence Tommy had developed his characteristic Cumberland throw that snuffed out many a difficult situation.

Tommy was dogged by injuries that meant he never played 30 matches in any season. Tommy`s end of season break usually entailed a scheduled operation to set him up for the next campaign. Martyn recovered from two reconstructions on separate knees, three broken arm injuries and four hernia operations. These breaks more than anything else help to explain his limited representative honours. He did not play at all in the 1995/96 centenary season and he missed the 2002 Grand Final through end of season injuries after making many vital contributions on the road to that particular Saints` victory.

The back-to-back Wembley triumphs over Bradford in the 1996 and 1997 Challenge Cup Finals were major triumphs for Tommy and the Club. Although the former was probably the greatest Challenge Cup Final in the history of the game, the latter highlighted the class of Tommy who provided a timely switch pass on the angle for a magnificent try that saw Chris Joynt storming 20 metres to score the try that broke the Bradford resistance. He also put through a long raking kick for Anthony Sullivan to chase and outstrip the Bulls defence. When you throw in his own personal two try haul and a solid game in defence, there was only one serious candidate for the Lance Todd Trophy - `Tommy God`. He was also present a year earlier as Saints romped to the first Super League Championship in 1996.

In 1999 he was a crucial element of Ellery Hanley`s plans to bring the Super League trophy to St Helens. That particular season culminated in 143 points for Tommy from 14 tries, 41 goals and 5 drop goals from 29 appearances. At this time Tommy seemed to reflect and reinforce Saints` free spirit on the field. One of Tommy`s most memorable matches was on the ninth of July, 2000 when the maestro mesmerised the Wigan defence and helped himself to a hat trick of tries as the Saints defeated the old enemy by 30 points to 28. The Saints entertained their way to Old Trafford and Tommy collected another hat trick in the 58 points to 18 drubbing of Warrington on the 20th of August. Tommy ended up with 22 tries that season and was voted the 2000 Super League Players` Player of the Year. He also represented Ireland in the 2000 World Cup that year.

A few months later the Saints lifted the World Club Championship on a freezing February night at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton. Who would ever forget that early second half omen that greeted the Brisbane Broncos - snow and hail! At 18 points to six down, a kamikaze 20 metres dashing touchdown from Sean Long was soon, followed by a beautiful sidestepping of Sailor by Paul Newlove to find Captain Fantastic on the inside to score in front of the Saints faithful. Joynty then led a Saints defence that completely nullified the Broncos legendary attack with two drop goals from Long and Sculthorpe sealing the victory.

The treble was then completed a few months later when Saints defeated Bradford in wicked weather at Twickenham in the 2001 Challenge Cup Final. In this match Tommy collected a beautifully weighted Sean Long grubber kick to put Saints in the driving seat in the driving rain. Just one week prior to this victory Tommy had played in a below par away performance at Warrington and had lost by 56 points to 22. However, this match was a milestone for Tommy as he became only the second Saint, alongside Len Killeen, in history to score 100 career tries and goals.

In Tommy`s last full season at the Saints, Tommy made 29 appearances and was Saints` third best points scorer with 84 points from 18 tries, 4 goals and 4 drop goals. Tommy looked as sharp as ever at the start of the 2003 season, however, two serious arm injuries gave him some time to reflect upon his future career in the game. His final match in Saints colours occurred on the second of May, 2003 in Saints` crushing 38 points to nil away victory over Halifax in front of 3372 spectators. An arm injury, together with a series of slick passes and a solitary touchdown characterised Tommy?s contribution that particular inclement night. Tommy left the Saints in June 2003 to take up an assistant coach/playing role with his hometown club Leigh Centurions with the best wishes of all who had the pleasure to see him play.

Tommy Martyn made 211 appearances for the club scoring 743 points from 127 tries, 105 goals and 25 drop goals. His honours included four Championships (1996, 1999, 2000 and 2002), three Challenge Cup winners medals (1996, 1997 and 2001) together with a World Club Championship medal. Not bad for a Leyther!
