Biography of Thomas Mawson

HERITAGE NO : 112
Thomas Mawson by Alex Service

The St. Helens club between the last decade of the 19th century and first of the 20th were always on the lookout for 'North Country' talent, especially from Cumberland. Yet Thomas joined the Saints from Askam, in Lancashire, the same team from which scrum-half Fred Trenwith played for, who later became a Saint himself.

The 1891 and 1901 Census returns give us more details about Thomas. He came from a large family. In 1891, at their home in Askam, were five brothers: Fleming, Hartley, Joseph, William and Thomas, the youngest, born in 1880. Their mother, Hannah, was widowed and by 1901, Fleming, William and Thomas remain in the household, working, according to the Census, as 'Pig iron works labourers'. It seemed, therefore, quite appropriate that they should be living in Steel Street!

At some stage, the family must have gone south and returned to Askam, as Thomas is registered as being born in Broughton, Lancashire, in 1880. By his early 'twenties, Thomas caught the eyes of some of the Northern Union clubs with his performances for Askam and decided to take advantage of the Saints' Committee's advances. He was the archetypal strong, tough forward that the Saints' Committee were looking for and he made his debut against Brighouse Rangers in a league match on 27th September 1902. The Saints won 4-3 in Yorkshire, but the 1902-03 season saw the team slide somewhat unceremoniously into the Second Division, despite Thomas showing himself to be well worth his place in the forwards.

The 1903-04 campaign saw Thomas continuing his good form, with 39 appearances in the pack. The season, of course, ended in triumph as the Saints beat [level on points] Holbeck in a special Test Match at Huddersfield to secure promotion back to the Top Tier.

Alas, Thomas seemingly had had enough at Knowsley Road by November 1904, when he wrote to the Committee asking for his transfer. E. J. Hannaford, the Saints' Chairman, recorded in the Minutes that: 'It was decided to retain him on our register and that he be written to that effect'. Thomas continued to play, however, although selections for the A team became more frequent. He played his last match for the seniors at Halifax on 29th April 1905. Saints lost 2-23, but this was the last of Thomas's 86 matches in three years.

The Mawson trail, rugby-wise seemingly goes cold, but the 1911 census picks him up as living in Leigh, with wife Elizabeth and a young family. Thomas wasn't at home. He is listed as a miner in South Africa! Obviously he had been involved with the [iron ore] mining industry earlier and this would probably have been a natural progression if work was scarce generally. And there the story ends. If anyone has any further information about Thomas and his South African adventure in particular, we would like to hear from you. The descendants of Thomas are unclear on his eventual death. Some maintain that he returned to Cumberland, whilst others trace his movement to Wharfdale in Yorkshire. The latter seems more likely as his wife Elizabeth died there. Records show that a Thomas William Mawson died in Wharfdale in July 1966 aged 85.
