Stan McCormick was born in Oldham on the 5th. of July 1923. He was signed from Belle Vue Rangers for a then record figure of 4,000 fee on the 19th of January 1949. The Club was determined to sign him and raised the cash by selling Len Constance and Harry Street to Dewsbury for £3000 on the same day of the signing. Stan was an accomplished professional sprinter, who gained a reputation as an Interception King. McCormick would swoop from the wing as if to crash tackle the man with the ball. Then as his opponent shaped to pass, Mac would turn inside him, pluck the ball out of the air and was gone. He once scored 16 interception tries in one season!

On his debut against Hunslet he scored two tries in an 11 points to 5 victory. During the match Joe Ball picked up and threw a loose pass to Alan Prescott, who transferred the ball to Stan the Man. Mac slipped his opposite winger Bowman, sped down the wing and completed an incredible in and out move on the Hunslet full back Griffiths to dive over in the corner after an 80 yards run. The supporters and Directors were on their feet in state of ecstasy. An instant return on their investments and a star attraction to boot! Stan finished the season by scoring 8 tries from 12 games.

His first full season for the Saints witnessed a sharp rise in the fortunes of the Saints as the team finished seventh in the league just two points out of a top four play-off position. His 25 try haul that campaign included a hat trick against Workington Town and four tries against Hull. Stan was instrumental in making the Saints an exciting team to watch and as a consequence the financial position of the club began to improve consequentially. Stan`s appearances were limited the following season as injuries took their toll. The 1951/52 campaign brought only 5 tries from 23 tries and it seemed a little of Stan`s magic was disappearing. However, the introduction of Jim Sullivan as coach rejuvenated Stan and the team to one of their greatest ever seasons - the 1952/53 campaign. In that season Saints remained undefeated in away matches as Stan topped the Saints try scoring charts for the only time, with 38 tries from 47 matches. This total included four try hauls against Liverpool City, Leigh and Bramley alongside hat tricks against Warrington and Widnes. As well as finishing top of the league by dropping only 6 points from 36 matches, the Club lifted the Championship by defeating Halifax by 24 points to 14 at Maine Road. Saints won the Lancashire League Championship by 10 points but lost the Lancashire Cup Final to Leigh and the Challenge Cup Final to Huddersfield.

In Stans last season he had scored 16 tries in 24 matches prior to being transferred to Warrington. He also landed single goals against Bradford Northern and Warrington. The glory run had continued as Saints went on to lift the Lancashire Cup against arch-enemy Wigan. When Stan played his last match for Saints against Warrington on the 2nd of January, 1954 the Saints had only lost one league match away to eventual table-toppers Halifax. The decision to sell `Mac` to their main rivals in Lancashire appeared `quirky` as he had already netted two hat tricks against Liverpool City and Castleford by the mid-point of the season.

Stans departure left him tantalisingly on a total of 99 tries for the Saints (currently 25th on the all time list). Whilst at Knowsley Road Stan McCormick gained one Great Britain cap, six caps for England and played for Lancashire on eight occasions. Ironically in the same season as his departure from the Saints, Stan played for Warrington in the famous re-played Challenge Cup Final at Odsal watched by over 104,000 fans! This completed Stans set of winners medals (all collected in a twelve month period). He later coached the Saints from 1962-64 leading them to a couple of Lancashire Cup triumphs as the side was rebuilt towards the glory years of the mid-sixties.

Stan died in St Helens in July 1999, aged 77.
