Biography of Edwin McCully

HERITAGE NO : 627
Edwin McCully played his only game for the first team in the league away defeat to Wakefield Trinity by 36 points to 7 in March 1945. He played on the left wing in this match. He lived in McFarlane Avenue, St Helens, just a stone’s throw from the Saints ground in Knowsley Road. In his only match things were still very much on a war front and the club still had difficulty in getting a team together with many players still in the Forces. Edwin stepped up to the mark and gave a good account of himself. In 2020, Edwin received his Heritage Certificate #627 courtesy of his great nephew Mark McCully who played for the Saints in 2001. His nephew, Steven, told us that Edwin was absolutely chuffed to receive the classy Heritage Certificate. Very sad to report that Edwin passed away in December 2020 in Street, Somerset just two months shy of his 100th birthday. At the time of his passing no other first team player had ever lived to that age.
