Biography of John McKay
HERITAGE NO : 10 John McKay played for the Saints in their first ever Northern Union match against Rochdale Hornets on the 7th of September, 1895. The Saints prevailed that day by 8 points to 3. He was a forward who played his last match against Oldham in January 1899. Between those dates John played on many occasions for the A team. He originated from Widnes and moved to St Helens where he worked as a railway clerk. In 1901 he was living at 125 Morlet Street St Helens with his wife Annie and young son John. John decided to start a new life in the early twentieth century when he emigrated with his family to Canada. The 1911 Canadian Census saw the family living at 257 Sackville Street, Toronto where John was working as a clerk. John and his son John Wilfred both served in the Number 2 Canadian Field Ambulance Medical Corps during the Great War. John Wilfred was tragically killed in April 1915. John SNR relayed his son’s death by letter. Devastatingly, John McKay SNR was also killed in October 1917 whilst serving in Europe.
