 HERITAGE NO : 469 Peter McLoughlin by Alex Service An engaging tale about this local-born front-rower was told by Traveller, the Saints correspondent, in the St.Helens Newspaper on 11th October 1937: 'Standing outside the Saints Pavilion where the players were getting stripped for the first trial match of the season, looking particularly glum, stood a local youth waiting patiently and almost on the point of asking for a game. The Possibles were a forward short. Did he want to play? The youth simply dived into the dressing rooms and was donning a jersey in quick time. Even in that match when he was almost without training, he gave a display that caught the eye. Several games in the A Team brought him on by leaps and bounds until Monday, against the Recs, when he was generally acclaimed to be the best forward on the field. Saints have recognised his un-flapping enthusiasm and his fine play and tomorrow, McLoughlin, for that is his name, makes his debut in the First Team. Mac as he is now familiarly known enters the First Team as a result of hard work.' After making an impressive debut against Dewsbury on 2nd October 1937, Peter McLoughlin managed another 11 matches, his last being against Salford on 21st January 1939. In 1921 Peter was living in Johnson Street, St Helens with his mother, brother, sister and three boarders. His father was deceased and his mother, Elizabeth, was registered as a Boarding Housekeeper. He was a Coal Hewer by trade and in 1939 was living in Rodney Street, St Helens. He died in June 1971 aged 58 and his death was registered in Prescot.
